If I think about all this, it’s because of the reflections.
I saw there not who you were, but what you represented. That solid rock — you have often been compared to a rock — takes the waves beating against it, which then break with a muffled crash. It sweeps away all those who tried to exist through it and reminds them of their futility.
The art world, which has formed around the existence of artists, reflects the image of those crustaceans clinging to the rock. Without questioning its own legitimacy, this world orbits artificially around what is most sacred. From this spiral, all contours will fade away. No names will remain.
Curators forgotten. Theorists forgotten. Gallery owners forgotten. Critics forgotten.
Only the artist will remain — alone — having traversed History.
— Caroline Gaudriault
